Should there be an ink pad in the letterbox or do you take
one along with you when you hunt a letterbox?

My assumption has to NOT include the ink pad. Mostly, because they may
detoriate over time, especially with freezing or very hot weather. And,
given the variety if wonderful stamp pads available, people would
probably have their favorites anyways. Finally, if you are doing many
bozes, its just an added cost to bear.

I put an ink pad in my boxes--just in case. Besides, if someone stumbles
upon it (not likely with MINE anymore...!) and wanted to play they could
use a thumbprint instead of a rubber stamp to say hello in the log book.

I also include
Letterboxing info--general and specific to the box, including
instructions
Log book
Carved stamp
A pen
A paper towel
A ziploc bag or two
Surprises

But I also take a pad when I go lookin'--

I suppose you're right - encouraging the accidental finder to become a
participant (hopefully instead of a vandal). Most of my decisions about
pad and pen, BTW, grow from seeing pen's left in my car freeze and burst
in winter. I like the thumbprint idea!
